Diasporas Now: Tecnobrujxs for the V&A East pre-opening programme back2back’s first event InBetween: A Latinx Takeover

28 September, 2024

Conjuring alternative futures through the vantage point of pre-colonial deep time, Diasporas Now invites Kianí del Valle and Paola Estrella to the Victoria and Albert Museum’s back2back – two artists with embodied world-building practices that envision rebirth beyond the political, social, and ecological crises of our present, with a “Backstage with Diasporas Now” panel discussion moderated by Rieko Whitfield.

With a nod to East London club culture reverberating between Europe and the Americas, Tecnobrujxs is a cross-diasporic, techno-shamanistic ceremony for the pre-opening of the V&A East, InBetween: A Latinx Takeover centering Latinx expanded performance artists and their collaborators – South London-based producer Kamixlo and production duo Yerosha Windrich and Elfed Alexander Morris of Bon Music Vision.

Diasporas Now: Tecnobrujxs Lineup

Paola Estrella x Bon Music Vision

Cenote Ring

Experience a site-specific performance that takes you deep into the symbolism and history of the cenote ring in Yucatan, Mexico. This multimedia event explores the myths and legends surrounding these natural sinkholes, created by an ancient asteroid impact. The performance connects the cenote’s historical and cultural significance with modern challenges like consumerism, environmental crisis, and the relentless pursuit of resources. Paola Estrella intertwines ancient beliefs with contemporary issues, inviting us to reflect on the tensions between past and present, nature and society. Original sound score performed live by Bon Music Vision.

Kianí del Valle x Kamixlo

ALMAS EN CADENA (CHAIN OF SOULS)

Kianí del Valle reimagines the body as a vessel and medium for different entities. Her performance draws inspiration from the Ibero-American horror film Cronos (1993) by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and the supernatural horror film The Haunting (1963) by British director Robert Wise. The choreography acts as a ritualistic exercise involving ancestral energy and the mysteries of the unknown. Original sound score performed live by Kamixlo.
