Open Call: Performance at Turner Contemporary and Residency at PRAH Recordings
Powered by People Dem Collective x Diasporas Now
In partnership with Turner Contemporary, Margate-based community organisation People Dem Collective (PDC), expanded performance platform Diasporas Now, and PRAH Recordings are seeking proposals from global majority-identifying artists at the intersection of music, performance art, dance, and other audiovisual performance-based practices.
Two artists will be selected and invited to perform at Movements from the Margins, part of Turner Contemporary’s late night Turner Lates events series, on Friday 30 August 2024. The event, organised by PDC and Diasporas Now, is inspired by the gallery’s current exhibition Ed Clark, the first institutional exhibition in Europe dedicated to this pioneering artist.
Selected artists will receive a week-long funded residency at PRAH Recordings in Margate in 2025, including complimentary on-site accommodation and access to fully equipped music recording studios.
The open call is for UK-based, global majority-identifying artists and musicians, collaborations and artist collectives. It seeks primarily sound-based interpretations of the ethos of improvisation, intuition and experimentation to nurture alternative cultural discourses.
Applications open on Monday 15 July, and close on Wednesday 31 July 2024.
About People Dem Collective:
People Dem Collective (PDC) is a Black-led community organisation based in Margate, Kent, dedicated to dismantling systemic racism and fostering social equity through the power of arts and culture. Rooted in the lived experiences of Black, Brown, and Diaspora communities, PDC strives to elevate underrepresented voices and create inclusive spaces that celebrate diverse cultural expressions. Our innovative programs and strategic collaborations aim to drive systemic change, promote community ownership, and build a more just and sustainable future for all.
About Diasporas Now:
Diasporas Now is a platform for expanded performance by the global majority, programming curated events that bridge workshops, panel discussions, museum lates, and nightlife. Their community celebrates cross-diasporic identities and champions artists of colour.
The platform was founded in 2021 by artists Rieko Whitfield, Paola Estrella, and Lulu Wang at the Royal College of Art. Originally focused on live-streamed programming, Diasporas Now has since expanded to live events at the intersection of performance art, visual art, music, dance, and fashion.
About PRAH Recordings:
PRAH Recordings started off 10 years ago to release contemporary classical and experimental music, and to work with artists who exist on the weirder fringes of pop music. It has released records by some notable creatives including the first release from Oliver Coates and later successes like Group Listening and Falle Nioke. Over the last decade it has added a studio complex in Margate to further enable its artists to indulge their creative desires – and although having a broader remit than in its earlier years, still very much focuses on giving artists free reign to experiment in their field.
About Turner Contemporary
Turner Contemporary is one of the UK’s leading art galleries. Founded to celebrate JMW Turner’s connection to Margate in 2001, the David Chipperfield-designed gallery opened in 2011. Our work extends beyond showcasing world-class exhibitions to driving the social and economic regeneration of Margate and East Kent and transforming lives in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.
Since it opened, Turner Contemporary has welcomed over 4.1 million visitors, put over £80 million back into the Kent economy, and connected with thousands of people from the local community through our world-class arts and education programmes.
About Turner Lates
Turner Lates is a series of free, late-night social experiences at Turner Contemporary offering visitors an opportunity to explore art after hours.
